In-vehicle driving lesson:

Most new drivers who fail their road tests were not adequately prepared. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends that all learners have at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving before taking road tests. This includes at least 15 hours of nighttime driving (after sunset) and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic.

Road Test:

Upon completing 50 lessons, students are scheduled for a road test. If the applicant passes, the examiner will typically issue an interim driver’s license valid for 90 days. Keep this interim license with your learner’s permit as proof of your driver’s license.

4 Point Reduction Program:

If you committed violations during the 18 months preceding the completion of the course, up to 4 points will be automatically deducted from your driving record. This point reduction can potentially prevent license suspension. However, it will not cancel mandatory suspension or revocation (e.g., 3 speeding convictions within 18 months) or any actions already being taken against the motorist’s driving privileges. Nevertheless, you may enroll in the New York Safety Program course every 18 months for point reduction.

Discount on Insurance Premium:

Upon completing the Point and Insurance Reduction Program administered by the New York Safety Program, you will be eligible for a three-year discount on your Collision and Auto Liability Insurance. This discount covers both Property Damage (PD) and Body Injury Protection (PIP) components of your liability premium. The discount will apply to all vehicles you are listed as the principal operator.
